Another year is over, and a new one has just begun. It’s the time of the year to make your New Year’s Resolutions. This year, I’ve decided to make resolutions that affect my home instead of my body. So here are my 2019 Home New Year’s Resolutions.
1. Get caught up on deferred home maintenance.
I get it. It’s easy to put off home repairs until you have the money or time. Unfortunately, the longer you wait, the more expensive it will be to make the repairs.
2. Make a cleaning schedule.
CLEANING SUCKS!!! but you’ve got to do it. Clean once a week with a deep-clean once a month. Get in the habit of washing dishes each night before you go bed. Make sure your dirty clothes make it to the laundry bags. Take the time to dust, vacuum, and mop once a week to maintain a clean home.
Get rid of anything you don’t use. Start the new year out by going thru your closets and throwing away or donating things you don’t need or don’t use. My rule of thumb is if you haven’t used it or worn it in 2 years it needs to go.
We all have a wish list of things we would like to do around our homes. Make a list and prioritize your improvements. Set a budget, figure out how much time it will take to complete and set a completion date. Schedule time each week to work on the project with the goal of being completed by the completion date.
5. Keep your home safe.
Each year you need to perform a safety check around your house. Make sure all smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are working correctly. Make sure you have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen that is easily accessible. Check all the door locks and window locks to make sure that they are not loose or damaged. Walk around your property looking at the roof and siding to make sure there is no damage or spots where pest can enter your home.
A new year brings means a fresh start. Start this year out with a plan to improve and refresh your home. Stay focused and work your plan every day and by the end of 2019, you will be surprised to see what you have accomplished.
